Love me, Love me not

Love me, Love me not
Author: jeano

Warning: Major OOC-ness

Pairing: ShikaIno

Nara Shikamaru lay under a tree, arms folded comfortably behind his head. As he stared up at the sky, he thought about his life, people, events.

His thoughts wandered inadvertently to his teammate and crush, Yamanaka Ino, and in response, his cheeks turned a shy shade of pink. 'How troublesome,' he muttered without much conviction. He thought about her blonde hair, bunned up neatly behind her head and longed to let it run through his fingers.

He ached to touch her soft, fair skin and caress her cheek. He didn't have to worry about having her in his arms; he often had to take care of her body whenever she performed Shintenshin no Jutsu, and her mind was somewhere else.

Shikamaru sat up abruptly as a rather unpleasant thought crossed his mind- Uchiha Sasuke, #1 Rookie and probably the most popular guy with the ladies. Even Ino and the level-headed Sakura couldn't resist his charm and were hopelessly in love with him.

Shikamaru thought about his appearance-small eyes, a downturned mouth, poor fashion sense, earrings, and a stiff bunch of hair tied up at the top of his head. Shaking his head sadly, he knew that he was no match for Sasuke, who was from an advanced bloodline and consequently, possessed the intriguing Sharingan. What Shikamaru did possess, was an incredibly high IQ that was well above 200, according to Asuma-sensei's estimate.

His gift of intelligence from Kami-sama came with a hefty price though, as it made him seem to have a rather cynical and bored air about him. This repelled girls, and Ino too seemed to have a rather profound dislike for him.

Sighing, Shikamaru lay down once more, crossed his legs, and resumed his daydreaming while staring at the sky through the gaps between the leaves.

Yamanaka Ino leaned against the counter of the flower shop business owned by her family. It was currently the low season for business, for Valentine's Day had long passed. Of course, there would be the occasional male who would come in and order a bouquet of roses for his crush, girlfriend or mother. But otherwise, business at the shop was rather slow- moving, so more flowers wilted than they were sold.

Sighing, Ino walked over to the shelf where the red roses were and picked one out. Fingering the silky and delicate petals gingerly, Ino began to wonder what Sasuke-kun thought of her. Did he find her pretty? Smart? Impressive? Or was she just another figure on the street?

However much she liked Sasuke (for his looks and cool attitude), she realised that they could never be together. For one, she had many rivals waiting for the first chance to pounce on the opportunity to impress Sasuke- kun. Secondly, Sakura was on his team, meaning that she could spend more time with him and hence stood a greater chance in winning his heart.

Sighing once more with resignation, Ino undid the cloth that kept her lustrous blonde hair in a bun. Her soft hair rippled like a wave and settled like a fair mist around her shoulders. She stroked her hair absently, pondering her future while staring hard at the red rose she had placed on the counter moments ago.

She picked the rose up, careful not to get pricked by its thorns and began to stroke the petals. Suddenly stricken by a foolish thought, Ino started plucking the petals off the rose, which was in full bloom.

'He loves me. he loves me not. he loves me. he loves me not. he loves me... he loves -'

Ino whirled around in surprise, having sensed a presence behind her.

'Oh, it's you,' she said, almost in disgust, as she found herself face to face with Shikamaru. She then busied herself, clearing the petals that she had plucked off earlier, careful to avoid Shikamaru's eyes.

She found that he was behaving rather queerly in her presence: fidgeting and staring at her as if in a trance. Under normal circumstance, as far as she could remember, he would simply ignore every thing around him and calmly stare at the sky. Or the clouds. Or whatever in the sky that caught his fancy.

Ino felt his gaze bore into the back of her head, and she shivered involuntarily. What was he thinking? She stole a glance at him from the corner of her eye and noted that his face was as unreadable as a mask, though he was watching her every move.

Just as she was wondering what he was doing in a flower shop, he spoke suddenly in his signature drawl,' So-what were you doing just now?'

Embarrassed by the question, Ino spun around to face Shikamaru, her cheeks pink. To him, she looked like an angel from heaven in that very instant-a surprised look gracing her cherubic face, and her fair hair formed a halo that framed her countenance. He barely heard her stammered replies to his question.

Shikamaru felt his cheeks grow hot and knew he was blushing. He cursed himself inwardly for letting his emotions be displayed like an advertisement on his countenance that screamed,' I like Ino!'

Fortunately for him, Ino, dense as ever, failed to comprehend this. She cocked her head to once side and stared at him questioningly. This made Shikamaru blush even more, and without another word, be bolted out of the shop, leaving a very bewildered Ino behind.

Barely minutes later, Shikamaru burst into the shop again, his face red. 'Ino, I'd. I'd like to buy a dozen red roses.'

'Why, yes, of course.' Ino smiled graciously and proceeded to wrap the roses in glossy paper. 'By the way, who's it for?'

Shikamaru did not reply but instead gave Ino a very badly smudged note in worse handwriting. It read:

iIno-chan, Please meet me at the park bench near the beech tree at the edge of the woods at 6 tonight. Love, Your admirer /i

By the time Ino had finished deciphering the note, Shikamaru was gone. But he had left the money on the counter. Ino smiled, although she was a little puzzled. Why would Shikamaru, a messenger, be so nervous?

Nevertheless, Ino forgot this conveniently enough and went about preparing for her meeting with her admirer that night.

Although she did hope that her admirer was Sasuke, but deep within her heart, she had an inkling that it could possibly be the nervous messenger.

Ino ran a comb through her lustrous hair, and thought about recent events. Her thoughts wandered back to what happened that afternoon-Shikamaru's uncharacteristic nervousness, and his unusual behaviour.

Somehow, Ino felt that his behaviour had something to do with the note. iPerhaps he's more than a messenger. It sure seems that he likes me, judging from his behaviour. /i

Ino then went on to ponder what Shikamaru meant to her. Was he just a teammate, a friend, or was he more than that?

Sure, he was always afraid of getting sucked into a 'troublesome whirlpool', but he was a decent guy, always there for his teammates. Ino giggled, as she thought of Shikamaru's somewhat ridiculous life plan: Marry an average looking woman, have two kids, the elder a girl, and the younger a boy. When his daughter had gotten herself married off, and his son was able to make a living, he would retire from the job of being a ninja.

Ino stared at herself in the mirror, and decided that she wasn't quite the gorgeous beauty, but was at least pleasant-looking with a body to flaunt. As she stared at the modest collection of clothes in her wardrobe, Ino wondered why Shikamaru liked her. She wasn't really an outstanding ninja, and she wasn't as smart as Sakura. In fact, there were many other girls out there who were smarter, prettier and better at her. Why her?

She thought about Shikamaru again, about his character, since he hadn't much looks to flaunt. He usually had a rather bored air about him, since he was so smart anyway. From the experiences she had with him during their missions, she decided that he was a brave and trustworthy person who would risk his life to save his teammates.

She remembered the examination Asuma-sensei set for them after they had graduated from the Ninja Academy. Three people had to work as a team in order to obtain two bells from him, and as a team, they succeeded. They relied heavily on Shikamaru's brilliant strategy, which Asuma was no match for.

Ino blushed as she remembered the time during the exam when she nearly fell into the river, and Shikamaru saved her just in time because he knew she couldn't swim.

Of course, Ino knew that perhaps that he saved her as an act of goodwill and not because he liked or anything. But something told her that perhaps being together with Shikamaru could be quite possible and even enjoyable.

She recalled all the times when they had argued with one another about trivialities, and realised that she had actually enjoyed doing so. In fact, a day without arguing with Shikamaru seemed incomplete to her, and it was only then that he had become an integral part of her life.

Ino was still rather confused as to how she felt about Shikamaru. True, she did care about him, but was her concern for him from the point of view of a teammate or was it more than just that?

Shikamaru went to the agreed spot nearly an hour before time. He was dressed immaculately, by his standards, in smart casual attire. Beside him on the bench was the bouquet of flowers he had purchased earlier.

He smacked his forehead hard, disgusted at his own stupidity. How could he buy flowers from a girl and then give them back to her as a present? How dumb of him! And here he was trying to impress the girl of his dreams.

He was just about to give up waiting at half past six when he caught a whiff of a rather distinctive scent that he'd know anywhere. iIno-chan! She has come! /i

He was just about to stand up to offer his greetings to Ino when his breath stopped. She was dressed rather provocatively in a skintight turtleneck that bared her belly button playfully, and a pair of white shorts that hugged her shapely thighs.

Shikamaru felt his face heat up again, and Ino winked at him cheekily. She walked up to him and plonked herself comfortably on the bench. 'Hi,' she whispered.

'Uh. uh. hello.' Shikamaru stammered nervously, his cheeks a shy shade of pink. He felt well, a little confined in the crotch area of his Bermudas as he let his eyes run up and down her slender legs. Ino giggled girlishly as she noticed Shikamaru's discomfort. iHow unlike him! He's usually so calm and nonchalant./i

She noted that he was twiddling his thumbs nervously.

Then almost as if he had been reminded to do so, Shikamaru whipped the red blossoms out from behind him. As he handed them to her, she squealed in delight.

Shikamaru stared at her oddly. She seemed rather different from that afternoon, somehow. Normally, she would probably have snatched the flowers from him and then thrown a caustic remark at him. However, now, she was utterly delighted to see the flowers although she knew all too well that they were from her own backyard.

Something wasn't quite the same as before, but he couldn't put his finger on it. Still, he decided to go ahead with his confession.

Ino was gushing about how beautiful the sunset was when Shikamaru interrupted her softly,' Ino-chan.'

Surprised, she stopped and listened, completely taken in by the sincerity in his voice.

Mustering all his courage, Shikamaru managed to get the confession past his lips. 'I. I. actually. I really like you.'

Much to his surprise, Ino blushed. A pregnant pause ensued before she spoke quietly in almost a whisper,' Actually, I think you're cute. And. I realised this afternoon. that I like you too.'

Shikamaru was caught completely off guard by her startling confession. But he was too happy to care.

He inched towards Ino carefully until they were sitting together, shoulders touching. Ino rested her head on Shikamaru's shoulder and sighed contentedly as they both watched the sun set, staining the sky a beautiful vermillion.

Meanwhile, Uchiha Sasuke peered out from behind a tree in the distance, and felt a small pang of pain at the loss of yet another one of his fangirls.

A/n: Hi. This is my first Naruto fic. Hope you all enjoyed reading it. (Sorry for the lame title XD) I know Shikamaru and Ino are rather OOC, but I hope you didn't find it totally uncharacteristic of them. Oh yes, this fic will have no sequel. Hehheh. Ja for now (and I hope to write more ASAP)

Learning to Beg Sasuke's POV

Disclaimer: I’m damned sure Naruto don’t belong to me. Yup, yup, yup. It belongs to creator and mastermind Masashi Kishimoto-sama (Does anyone else think I’m kissing ass? Yeah… I thought so…)

Author’s Note: Yay! We have Shonen Jump down here at California! Finally, I get to have some decent manga! Well, even though I’ve only read the first chapters of Naruto I have to say, I love it! I’m rooting for Sasuke/Sakura pairing but that doesn’t seem to happen any time soon, does it? Well, I felt the need to find good fanfics, but failed, and found very little Naruto fanfics, websites, and images. Only Japanese sites, which is sad really, since I have no drop of Japanese in my veins. Luckily, I came to my trusty and found some good fanfics. Most of them, however, are Sasuke/Naruto, which is sort of disturbing, and a very limited amount of Sasuke/Sakura. After reading a particularly good one, Learning to Beg by Uchiha Nyu I became inspired. I liked the fic so much I decided to write it on Sasuke’s P.O.V. (Uchiha Nyu’s is written in Sakura’s P.O.V.) So now, thanks to Uchiha Nyu-chan, who’s letting me post it, I present you Learning to Beg, on Sasuke’s POV! Enjoy!

Rating: Considering the nature of this fic, and after much consideration from Uchiha Nyu-chan and me, we’ve decided to put a PG rating on this fic. Nothing to worry about, just a bit of insinuation but nothing concrete you dirty minded people!

Summary: It takes place before the Chûnin exam. (When that happens, don’t ask me, I haven’t read that far yet!) It’s supposed to be overly sappy and fluffy, so if you don’t like fluff, stay back, I warned you! Be warned lots and lots of sweet fluff ahead, if you suffer from molar, incisor, or fang problems, the author refuses to pay any dentist bills that may be caused by the reading of sugary SasuSaku fics. Don’t complain, I warned you properly. Oh, and before I forget, there’s out-of-character-ness in this fic, so don’t complain.

Learning to Beg

Author: Brianna Darknight

(Sasuke’s POV)

By: Brianna Darknight The Angel of Darkness

Inspired by: Uchiha Nyu-chan’s Learning to beg. (Sakura’s POV)

It had been a hard task to leave her in the morning. The inviting warmth of her body, her engulfing scent of cherry petals, and the idea that she would be able to liberate me of my loneliness; made me hesitate, upon leaving her side.

I could not stay.

I could not give her false hopes of feelings I was unsure of. I would not be so cruel as to do that, for just a few more moments of peace, warmth, and… love.

That’s why, hesitantly, I lifted my arms off her small and soft body and proceeded to leave. Unconsciously, her body clutched against me after being denied comfort and warmth. When I had risen, however, I made sure her body was snugly covered with the blankets. My hand ventured up to the soft skin of her cheek, but I could not bring myself to caress her.

I could not be so cruel to her!

I was trying unsuccessfully to smooth my unruly black hair, looking at myself in her mirror, when I noticed a dusty hair dryer sitting on the dresser. On impulse, I reached to touch it, as well as all the other trinkets on top of that dresser. I wanted to hear the stories behind them:

Why that hair dryer was unused?

What those silly little bottles of color were?

Not today, however, maybe I would learn about this some other time… maybe, just maybe.

Walking up to her door and giving her one last look; I left. The door remained open as witness and proof of my departure.

My walk home was uneventful and… cold.

Now that for the first time, I had experienced what it was to have warmth, the morning seemed cold. I arrived home too quickly, it seemed. As I was lost in confusing thoughts and emotions and feelings I had never felt before had began to arise. I could not identify what these feelings meant however.

I longed to be with her, speak to her, laugh with her, and so many other things. The thought of loosing her would be unbearable and it brought a pang to my heart that left me breathless.

I could not let that happen.

I would let no one hurt her.

It did not matter that she was a strong Genin and could clearly protect herself. I still felt a need to keep her safe.

“Why?” I asked myself softly as I entered my house, “Why do I want to protect her so badly?” Puzzled as I was, I decided to shower quickly and leave to meet, Kakashi-sensei, even if he was be as late as usual. After taking a brief shower and dressing in a clean training outfit; I left home.

A cool morning greeted me and the fresh breeze seemed to clear my troubled mind. The first rays of gold and red were visible in the horizon as the sun rise approached, making the path lighter and easier to see. I was walking faster than usual, I noticed, as suddenly the bridge came in to view. My heart sank when I didn’t see her there, already waiting.

Pulling my cold hands inside my pockets, I slowed my pace now that I had made sure she was not there yet. I looked down at the ground thinking.

What do I tell her? What do I say? My mind ran with different options as what to say. Nothing, however, appeared fitting. Last night… last night… even as confusing as it was, had happened; and I had to say something to keep myself from thinking it was only dream.

I looked up from my feet. Only to be greeted by the glorious sight of her walking toward the bridge. She, as well, seemed to be lost in thought, looking at the ground she walked upon. Her hands squeezed together, wringing nervously. My heart, I noticed, soared with happiness at her sight, and I had to stop myself from running to her side to meet her. This brought me new baffling questions.

What had made me want to run and greet her?

What would my running to her have accomplished?

Why had I stopped myself?

I let out an exasperated sigh and closed my eyes. The road was so familiar, I did not fear stumbling nor falling. I simply walked, my eyes closed, my hands still in my pockets, to lean against the usual spot on the bridge. The old wooden boards of the bridge groaned under my weight. They seemed to creak louder under my every step, as if my heavy confusion added weigh to my stride. Her hurried steps caught my attention, yet I remained there, calmly leaning against the wood, my eyes unopened. I feared, my seeing her once more, might make me do something I’d regret. I felt an unexpected pang in my heart, as I heard her greeting, in a would be cheerful voice.

“Ohayou, Sasuke-kun.” Her voice, I observed, trembled a bit.

Do I dare look at her? I asked myself, slowly opening my eyes and turning my face to see her.

“Aa…” I greeted back and rapidly closed my eyes once more.

NO. I could not look at her yet, I needed to calm myself first. I needed to figure out what all this mixed-up feelings inside me meant and then I would be able to look to her properly.

Hoping I did not offend her with my monosyllabic greeting, for the last thing I wanted to do now is hurt her, but I could not risk doing something foolish.

Not after last night…

Last night…

Every year, I dreaded the coming of this day. Yet, as I had sorely come to realize over the years, time did not stop, quickened, nor skipped at one’s will. However, though it did not seem logically possible, I was willing to bet it did the contrary. Time seemed to slow when you whished it went fast. Of course, when you wished it to quicken, it would slow down.

Naruto, my teammate, had left to the Ichiraku, with Iruka-sensei, to eat some ramen. A chuckle almost left my lips. Naruto and his one-track mind, thinking of nothing else but ramen throughout the day. Kakashi-sensei had as well departed somewhere, but I could not care less. The only one that remained there was Sakura. Maybe she would leave, or maybe my ignoring her would get rid of her.

Grateful for the uneventful morning and a quiet night I hoped would follow, I sat silently reminiscing on events that happened long ago. Agonizing memories of death and torture from my past began to resurface as they did every year. That’s when her voice broke my train of thought.

“Ne, Sasuke-kun, what’s bothering you?”

I contemplated the answer. I could be cold, mean, and distant, breaking her spirit, and making her leave. Did I want to be alone, though? Something inside said no. I didn’t want to be alone, not again, not tonight. I hesitated, yet answered firmly.

“It’s nothing.”

Maybe she had noticed my overstated coldness throughout the day, my silence during training, or my lack of focus in the mission. The gleaming gash on my right cheek the cat had made was proof of that. All in all, she had noticed and read my distress with the small hints I gave. I was thankful that she cared enough about me to notice. I took my usual brooding position, but she did not leave. She stood there, administering unspoken support, even if she hadn’t noticed. Finally she sighed defeated.

A few minutes passed before she made another sound.

She punched a fist into her palm and let out a lively, “I know!” A bit startled, I wondered what she knew. “Ne, Sasuke-kun? I have a little favor to ask of you.” She said brightly turning to see me.

Intrigued, I straightened my back and looked at her. I blinked questioning.

“Hmm? Nani?” I felt not in the mood for an sinuous conversation.

She looked into my eyes before answering, and I noticed a faith blush adorn her cheeks. “Can you help me train?”

I blinked once more, again, and again.

Of anything I had been expecting, training, came as a surprise. Had she not noticed my lack of focus whilst we trained? And here I thought she had noticed it. However, training would sufficiently rid me of the torturing night that followed, so with a small nod, I agreed. Maybe she would be able to tire me enough and I would have a dreamless night when I finally left home.

Nothing could have prepared me for what followed…

“Iya… that’s not it…” I gasped. “Itai… ughh… Sakura…” I breathed her name silently. “--yamerou.. Itai da yo! Aahh… ugh. Fft…ah!”

“It’s not any of these… how about this one?” She asked touching the next one.

“OI! What do you think you’re… ah! Hey, yame-- ugh!” I gasped once more. “Ita… itai… itai yo… Saku--RA!”

When she had mentioned training, I had not realized she meant acupuncture training. Now, after an hour of using me like a pincushion, she had hit the wrong pressure point and paralyzed me completely, and it hurt too! I managed to roll on my side to try to ease the pain. I found, painfully, that only augmented the torture, so I rolled back to my stomach.

At first, it had been pleasurable. The stress and anxiety was leaving my body, and I felt extremely calm, as I hadn’t felt in a long time. I was relaxed and softly drifting to a stupor, lying on her cool bed, shirtless, her soft hands carefully piercing needles to my skin.

Oh, but the excruciating pain that followed was unnerving.

“I… I’m so sorry, Sasuke-kun!” I heard her whisper the apology from above me. “I’ll take them all out now. Then you should be able to move again.” She said soothingly, her voice guilt-ridden. With excruciatingly patience and care, she began the task of extracting the needles off my back. I relaxed my body, knowing that if I moved or jerked, I ran the risk of being killed!

“I’m really sorry, Sasuke-kun.” She voiced another apology as she was about to remove the last needle. Her warm fingers brushed softly against my skin as she did so, sending a wave of delight down my spine. It was more than delight, it was ticklish, it made me want to laugh.

“Ha.” I jerked, actually cowered, hoping she had not noticed how sensible the spot she had just touched was. I was able to restrain a fit of senseless laughter. I bit her pillow for strength. She was quiet for a moment and I only hoped she had not noticed.

“Sasuke-kun…” Her voice was incredulous. “Are you… ticklish?” She whispered amazed trailing a her fingers down my spine.

She had noticed!

She had noticed!

Help me God!

I let out a jovial laugh that sounded strange even to me.

“I KNEW IT!” She exclaimed in satisfaction.

“Yose! Oi…” I could not stop laughing. “Hahaha… Sakura!” It was even hard to breathe. “Yame-- Hahahah… YAMERO…..”

She continued her tickling and proving, making me come to the point of squirming, crying and… begging her to stop. My attempts were fruitless however, and soon, I was trying to take revenge by tickling her as well. She was ticklish in her sides, and stomach, but mostly in the abdomen, which gave me the advantage, as I was taller and heavier than her.

Our battle lasted for an eternity, it seemed.

In the end, we both panted heavily, lying side by side, on her bed, our eyes closed. My shirt lay on the chair, folded nicely. I tried to recover it, yet, exhausted, I let it fall and fell back at her side. I cradled my aching stomach, even breathing made it ache, I had given up trying to retrieve the shirt. It felt good being at her side, in such intimacy. I groaned tiredly, turning to her I noticed she had fallen asleep, a smile brightened her features. After a moment of silent watching, my eyelids became heavy and I started drifting into the early stupor. I fell asleep, right by her side, for what seemed only a couple of minutes, when in reality it had been half an hour.

I stood promptly when I awoke, noticing the time on the alarm clock set on her dresser. I tried to smooth my hair while pulling my shirt on, but failed. She, as well, had awoken, a puzzled look in her face.

“Sasuke-kun…?” She asked in a small voice. “Something wrong?”

I thought for a moment. Wanting, strangely as it seemed, to kiss her for helping me tonight. I waked over to her, determined to plant a kiss upon those rosy-half-opened lips, yet in the end, in my cowardice and insecurity, I ended up patting her hair as I sat next to her on the bed.

“Arigatou, Sakura.” I voiced in a small whisper standing up. She looked at me confused, but I was sure she had heard me.

“Huh? I didn’t really do anything…” She said in disbelief, “Really!” She exclaimed as I turned to look at her once more. “I just screwed up my acupuncture and--”

“I know you were aware that something was on my mind tonight.” I cut her. “But you cheered me up without asking what it was.” I looked into those bright green orbs. “Why is that?”

She looked down at the rose patterned sheets on her bed before answering.

“Because…because I knew you didn’t want to talk about it and I… I didn’t want… to upset you even more.” She said looking back at me.

I thought about it for a moment. I wanted to thank her somehow, not just with a simple word, “Arigatou…” yet it felt that was all he could say.

“Don’t worry about it!” She said in a lighter voice, “After all, Sasuke-kun, you know how I feel for you. I’d do anything for you.” She swallowed forcefully and then continued. “Ne, what do you think do you think about me?”

“Hmm?” She caught me by surprise, “ What do you mean?” I looked into her eyes once more.

“I mean… I was wondering… do you… would you ever care about me… the way I care about you?” She asked timidly.

I was unsure of my feelings, I wanted to rush and do things I knew I would regret if I didn’t think about it carefully.

“I’m sorry! I know this isn’t the right sort of question to ask and if--”

“Maybe.” I cut her, hoping it would sound reassuring enough.

“Huh?” She asked startled.

“Well, I don’t really know how I feel for you. Tonight… tonight really confused me, but it’s okay.” I said as I noticed her smile faltering. “Really. It’s okay.” I tried once again to reassure her. “ You’ve done a lot for me. Arigatou. I was thinking too much again… About things… anniversaries of certain slaughters… I though this year would be as lonely as it always was whenever the anniversary of the Uchiha massacre comes around… but you came along… and I wasn’t alone for once… and for that… I thank you.” I reached for her door, feeling better than ever, however not wanting to leave to quickly. It was over. I could not ask more of her.

“Wait!” She yelled before I went too far. I turned to see her. “Can you stay here? Just for tonight?” Her cheeks became a soft pink color. “I don’t want you to be lonely…” She whispered at last blushing more brightly. I thought only for a moment.

“Fine.” She looked up at me surprised and pleased. “But in the morning, I won’t be here anymore.” I explained.

She nodded eagerly.

I took her in my arms, her body soft and warm against mine. My shirt lay on the floor in a bundle. I noticed how perfectly she fit against me. She smelled of cherry petals, I noticed as well. Her skin was soft and warm. Her pink hair soft to the touch. I had never in my life felt so safe, so peaceful, and so loved.

It had been a hard task to leave her in the morning.

Now, she leans against the rail opposite to me thinking, most likely about the events of the night before.

Naruto’s voice reaches my ears. I turn to look at him. He runs joyfully towards Sakura.

“OHAYOU SAKURA-CHAN!”

“Eeep!” Is her only response.

That’s when it comes to me. Just the right words to reassure her and myself about what had happened last night.

“Don’t tell him!” I whisper to her.

“Huh? Tell him what?” She looks at me in disbelief.

“Don’t anyone that I’m ticklish. Or where I’m ticklish.” I respond in a playful tone. She graces me with a bright smile, hope shining in her bright green eyes.

“Huh?” She asks still confused.

“It’s a secret between us two alone.” I wink at her. Her face brightens with a soft pink color.

“Hai!” She answers brightly before our teammate approaches us.

I smile while she’s not looking. Naruto is trying to catch her attention.

Too bad, Naruto-kun, I think to myself as they begin to talk. You’re going to have to find another girl to lust after. Sakura-chan is taken! I let out a soft chuckle and they turn to see me.

“What kind of ramen did you say you had yesterday, Naruto?” I ask drifting the conversation to my friends favorite topic. “Because I had something better than ramen last night!”

Maybe… just maybe…

Author’s 2nd Note: Well, did you like it? I’m so happy for myself! I actually ended my first one-shot, first Naruto fanfic! Yay! Well, all you have to do, is review now, tell me how it was! Oh and Arigatou, Uchiha Nyu-chan!

When We Were Small

Genre: Drama

Title: When We Were Small

Author: Kenhime

Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto. The decision of who gets to be with who should better be left in the hands of the creator Kishimoto-sensei. shudders I don't want to decide. I also don’t own Johnny Rzeznik’s song.

Long Author’s Note: I was planning to write a romance story for Naruto, since it’s fun, but then I couldn’t tell who was with who… ;; I don’t want to risk having to pair up two people that the creator personally didn’t want to pair up (the big question of the couples is still not answered, grr)… I thought maybe I should just write a fic for each of the three possible pairings in Team 7: SasuNaru, SasuSaku, and SakuNaru… But…I don’t know…something’s stopping me from doing that…

In the end, for the sake of trying to be IC, there are no pairings…just a SasukexNaruto friendship…

Anyway, this thirteen-page one-shot (this is the longest one-shot I’ve written so far) details the events that happened in Naruto’s life, from when he was six years old to thirteen. BEWARE OF SPOILERS! I know people are so gonna kill me because this is chalk full of spoilers from the anime episodes AND the manga volumes 1-15. horrible thought enters mind…and bashes pea-sized brain -- tells herself Usuratonkachi…

I was inspired to write a songfic because the song, “I’m Still Here” seemed to match Naruto’s character really well. Guess where the first and last scene came from…

I am a question to the world…

The little boy stumbled across the streets, his blond head bent down to his chest as if it was weighed down by grief. He stared down at his shoes, tattered from overuse, like his ragged and dirty clothes. As he passed by, he didn’t have to see nor hear them. He could feel those cruel whispers cutting through his innocence, those stares stinging him with their iciness, the thoughts that ran through their mind at the sight of the pitiful child. And he didn’t know why.

Not an answer to be heard.

His wobbly foot got caught in a hole and he fell forward, his hands barely stopping him from tasting dirt. The humiliation brought tears that distorted his vision and he struggled to stand up. He began to run, his tiny legs carrying him down the streets. He ran faster and harder, the muscles in his body tightening painfully. But he didn’t care—he wanted to lash these feelings out on himself. The world blurred in a blob of colors, indistinct and unimportant. Time seemed to not exist, life diluted and not so agonizing as before.

He was beginning to like running.

All a moment that's held in your arms.

By then, he was out of the village, and hot tears flowed freely down his whiskered-like cheeks. He continued to run until finally he tumbled down the green hill and landed face down on the grass. He breathed its fertile smell, the small leaves tickling his face as he turned his head to get air. His chest heaved up and down from sprinting, small beads of sweat running down his forehead. His wash-out blue eyes gazed at the horizon, the never-ending line separating land and sky. Must everything be so clear—so distinct?

Cries filled the air as he curled himself into a ball. Each sob grew louder as each thought plunged him deeper into despair. Everyone hated him. The other children refused to play with him. And his parents…his parents died, leaving him alone. What came after misery and bewilderment was anger. Angry because no one told him why they hated him. It was as if he was condemned even before he was born. Angry because those children ignored him, making his existence seem so hallow. And he was angry at his parents, who left him in this state of hell, so suddenly and so quickly that even the others began to think that he had been the cause of their demise.

And what do you think you'd ever say?

But they were wrong. They died from a lousy disease. They were distinguished shinobi, braving many battles and near-death experiences, yet they lost to a disease.

Everyone always seemed to blame him as the cause of every bad incident—treating him like as if he was bad karma. They were ignorant to think that he wouldn’t hear their distant voices, their words that were like spikes of ice that were thrown at his heart. They believed he would die one day, and save them from the terror he didn’t know he held inside. They wanted him to be cast away, a ghost—not even a shadow—that lurked in the streets, ignored and avoided. They didn’t want to see him—they wanted to think that he was harmless, never going to do any good.

I don't listen anyway…

But he would show them. He would melt the ice, break the hellish destiny they had envisioned, become the flame that would never be extinguished, and save them… Those people would then look at him with proud, friendly eyes. Just like how they would look at that man, dressed in those white crinkled robes and straw hat. He made a promise on that day, to be acknowledged, to be trusted, to be…accepted as a human being, not as a monster.

You ignore me,

And I’ll never be what you want me to be.

A long while he laid there, venting these painful emotions and bitter thoughts out in the open air and grass, until at last he settled into silence, too weary to think and feel anything. His half-lidded eyes continued to watch the grass gently swaying in the wind, the birds flying overhead, the clouds drifting sleepily by. One thought managed to cross his dull mind: he was sad and the weather was beautiful today.

“Hey, boy, wake up…Boy!” Someone was shaking his shoulder. The child opened his eyes groggily, his sight becoming clearer. He blinked at the blinding light of the afternoon, trying to make out the silhouette before him. He let out a sleepy moan as he pushed himself from the ground to sit up.

“W-what do you want with me?”

“Nothing, kid, it’s just that it’s getting late.” The stranger smiled at him kindly as he bent down. “You should go back home to your family.”

And what do you think you'd understand?

The blond boy stared at the man cautiously. No one had ever been this nice to him. There was a scar running across one cheek to the other on his nose, clumps of spiky hair tied back, making his head look like a pineapple. But the foreigner passed the mental test—his gentle eyes seemed to prod him to tell him—tell him everything. The young boy cast his eyes down on the ground.

“I…I don’t have a family,” he replied curtly.

Startled, the stranger asked, “How long have you been alone?”

“Mom and Dad died a week ago.”

“Sorry about that. Where do you live now?”

“No where. My house was sold couple days ago…” His answers were automatic, as if they had no meaning to him now.

The man’s eyes hardened at the answer for a flickering moment. “You mean to say that no one took you in?”

“No.”

“…How old are you, kid?”

“Six.” He could sense the concern and pity in the man, the natural sympathy one has for an orphan like himself. However—

I'm a boy, not a man.

“What’s your name?”

The boy was silent for a long time. He hated his name, the two words that turned people into glaciers, kindness into aloofness. But it would be the deciding factor whether or not the man was truly kind. “The name’s…Uzumaki Naruto.”

The man stiffened. Naruto did not look at him, waiting with a sinking heart for the man to abruptly apologize and leave. Or maybe the man would turn angry and hit him, blaming him for pretending to be a normal child. After all, who wanted to give pity on the likes of Naruto? The little boy stared down at the floor, his hand idly touching the grass.

You can take me and throw me away.

But he felt a hand on the top of his head, and it ruffled his hair. His azure eyes widened, mouth slightly agape. He could hear the man’s words, distant yet clear.

“Come on, kid, let me take you to the leader.” The man smiled at the incredulous look in Naruto’s eyes.

“…Who…who are you?”

“I’m a teacher. They call me Iruka-sensei.”

A hand was stretch out before Naruto, and with dazed eyes, the blond boy took it. Two people, one taller and older than the other, walked up the hill.

The whole room was dimly lit by the surrounding candles, the incense thick yet soothing to Naruto’s nose. He had never known that the leader was the same white-robed man he had just thought of awhile ago. His eyes strayed from the leader’s backside and to the scriptures engraved on the walls, archaic and almost creeping, the way it seemed to bore into his head.

“It seems like you don’t have a home now, Naruto.” The voice, weary and wise, brought the boy’s attention back to the chief in a snap.

“Can’t do anything ‘bout it,” Naruto muttered, instinctively—yet childishly—wary of the unsmiling and tactless old man.

“Indeed,” the old man turned around, his mouth in a firm line, worn deep lines running down his stern eyes. “You’re at an age in which you must start your education. In a few months, school will be starting.”

The thought of those kids giving him the cold shoulder was enough to fuel his bitter resentment inside of him. “I don’t want to go.”

The Hokage’s voice was final. “You’re ordered to go, child.”

“I’m…I’m not a child,” Naruto looked up, his blue eyes afire with indignation and stubbornness. “I—I can take care of myself, old man.”

Iruka shot an apologetic look in the village leader’s direction, but the Third Hokage paid no attention. Instead, the ends of his mouth crinkled and curled into an affectionate, tired smile. He took off the large straw hat and set it aside to look at the boy more closely. The old man bent down to the boy’s short height. “Why don’t we make a deal, hmm?

Naruto narrowed his eyes suspiciously. “What kind of deal?”

“If you go to school, I give you a place to live and something to eat.”

“Can I eat ramen?”

“As much as you want.” The blond-haired child cocked his head to the side thoughtfully before he broke into a grin.

“Deal.”

A little later, Naruto left the room to wait outside under the watchful eyes of the two ninjas. The Hokage turned his sagacious gaze on the tall young man. “I thank you for bringing him to me. I was concerned about him the past few days.”

Iruka dropped his eyes to the floor respectfully. “I don’t mind. What is it that you want to speak to me about?"

His superior stood before the portrait of the Fourth Hokage, studying it thoughtfully, until he said at last, “I have a request to make of you.”

“Please, sir?”

“Will you please take care of him?”

“I…”

The older man didn’t have to look over his shoulder to see his hesitation. “You are nineteen years of age, Iruka, strong enough to become Jounin. Yet you stayed here to become a teacher instead… In the memory of your parents, you wanted to guide these students to a path different from yours. But you will make an exception for this child—all because of what is sealed in him?”

“…The position of Anbu didn’t fit me… I felt that because of this weakness, I could not possibly succeed in the missions.”

The Hokage glanced sharply at him. “You didn’t answer the question.”

Iruka was silent for a long time before he closed his eyes, “When I found him, he was crying. Ironically, there was this feeling inside of me that wanted to help him. I suppose…out of the teachers here, I am the best person for the job, despite what happened six years ago.”

The leader turned away from the painting and picked up the large headdress. “Iruka.”

“Yes, Lord Hokage.”

“I know how you feel, but…like you, Naruto had no parents…” He set the hat on his head once more. “Please understand him.”

Iruka bowed. He wasn’t sure if he could or if he wanted to, but… “Yes, I’ll try.”

The old man reinstated his status, his eyes now stern and commanding. “You may go.”

When the teacher came to the hall, he found Naruto leaning on the wall, staring listlessly at the floor. He was suddenly aware of the looks the passer-bys sent in the boy’s direction and he stiffened in anger.

“…Iruka-sensei?” The blond-haired child looked at him questioningly, doubt clouding his mind again. Iruka’s eyes fell on him and softened.

“It’s all right, Naruto.”

“…Okay,” the boy said reluctantly. “I got the keys to the flat now. I’ll just be going home, then.”

“Hmm…” Iruka scratched his nose, searching in his mind for a way to befriend him. The kid seemed to like ramen, and he just got his pay today… “Before you go, why don’t I treat you to some ramen?” He couldn’t help but grin at the look of shock on the boy’s face. “Well?”

But he got a taste of his own medicine when Naruto suddenly hugged him around the waist.

Naruto stretched out his arms, his face split into a grin. He ran around the schoolyard after the butterfly, sometimes tripping on the grass. The insect’s flinty wings tickled the fingertips of the child, rousing giggles from him. Its colors were vivid in the noontime sun, flickering hues of red, orange, and yellow. To Naruto, it was the most beautiful living thing. But after awhile the butterfly flew above him and away, leaving the blond-haired boy disappointed that the fun was over. He glanced at the small wooden cage lying on the floor and smiled, unaware of the argument raging within the classroom.

And how can you learn what's never shown?

Iruka slammed his hands on the table, trembling in fury. He tried to keep his voice leveled as he spoke. “Are you meaning to say that you choose prejudice over the education of your children?”

A just-as-furious woman stood from her chair so abruptly that the chair fell over. “It’s not prejudice, Iruka-san, it’s security. You know what’s possessed in that child. He could harm the rest of the class—he could harm our own children!” The rest of the people sounded their agreement strongly until the noise died down to hear Iruka’s reply.

The teacher was quiet for a long time, his head bowed down in contemplation. “The Fourth Hokage…” he said finally, “sealed the nine-tails demon inside the child for the safety of the village. He wanted us to regard Naruto as a hero, not a monster. Is this how you will respect the last wishes of the Fourth Pillar?”

The parents shifted uncomfortably in their seats. The large conference room had grown unusually hotter. The woman, who seemed to be the representative of the rest, bravely held onto her petition by ruthlessly attacking him. “Why are you protecting the very demon that killed your parents, Iruka-san?”

Yeah, you stand here all alone.

The people murmured, appalled of the woman’s audacity to ask such a personal question. However, Iruka held her stare calmly and unfazed. He was winning this argument.

“I’m not protecting the demon, Shizumi-san, I’m protecting Naruto.”

Nothing could be said after that. After a few mumbles of apology, the adults filed out of the room. Shizumi dropped her head and exited as well, but not before shooting a hateful look at the boy standing outside.

They don't know me 'cause I'm not here.

Naruto cocked his head to the side, beginning to understand what the topic was in the room. Iruka found him gazing at the retreating backs of the parents, his azure eyes dejected.

“Oi, Naruto!” The boy glanced at him and broke into a grin once more.

“Iruka-sensei!”

The young man picked up the cage, puzzled. The little door was wide open and the occupant gone. “Where’s the butterfly I gave you?”

Naruto chuckled sheepishly. “I…I let it go.”

Iruka was startled, but then he smiled back. “I see.”

And I want a moment to be real,

The blond-haired academy student, the three-year failure, sat on the swing, watching as the other students walked away with their parents. Their head guards glinted in the light. Everyone had passed except him, leaving him by himself, covered in the shadows of the trees. Jealousy weighed in his heart as he saw men and women ruffle the hair of their children, or pat them on the back with approval. No one even comforted him, cheering him up with the fact that he could always try again. But it seemed like everyone didn’t want him to succeed. Even Iruka.

Wanna touch things I don't feel,

Wanna hold on and feel I belong.

He jumped off the swing and walked away. His hands curled into a fist and he blinked hard. No, he wasn’t going to cry. There was always another chance—another year. However, despair was eating him away like a steadfast parasite. When would he ever become a ninja?

His gaze turned to the Hokage monument, remembering the marks and swirls that he painted on the day before. He was a no-good prankster, a troublemaker that everyone disliked. No one took him seriously, but it was better than having no one paying attention to him. He wasn’t smart or talented enough to be acknowledged in class, so he took to the other extreme of the spectrum.

And how can the world want me to change,

They’re the ones that stay the same.

He tried so hard to prove his own worth. He trained his body, continuously doing pushups, sit-ups, running, and taijutsu. Dolls hung at the corners of his messy flat, torn with the many shuriken and kunai thrown at it. Books and scrolls were scattered across the floor of his apartment and he relentlessly studied them all night until his head would drop onto the paper. While his form was muscle-toned from the harsh training, he was uncoordinated with his movements, thus he lacked the grace of taijutsu. The intense studies did no good for him—he couldn’t understand it and it would slip past his mind like water through fingers. His grades were the lowest in class.

“There’s no way the demon fox wouldn’t try to use the power unlike what you’re assuming,” a long-haired man sneered.

“Hmm…you’re right,” Iruka agreed.

Naruto’s heart clenched and he choked. He unconsciously held the large scroll closer to him, his sweaty palms soaking into the old yellowed paper. His body had never before felt so numb from this newest rejection. Even…even the man who had been the only nice person to him didn’t accept him from the bottom of his heart. All those years of talking to Iruka, eating ramen…it seemed to dissipate like paper burned away from the flame.

They don’t know me,

Naruto was terribly conscious of the emptiness inside of him, the hollow sense of worthlessness that had finally settled on him. He was beginning to crumble under the many years of hardship and misery weighed on his small shoulders since the beginning of his life. He…really was a failure, a nobody that would never become Hokage.

'Cause I’m not here.

“The demon fox would do that.” There was more to Iruka’s words. Naruto snapped out of his anguish to listen for what else the teacher had to say. “…But…he is different. He is…” Naruto looked over his shoulder to peek over the trunk of the tree. Iruka was smiling, even though blood trickled down his mouth and his words came slowly in pants from the running and fighting. “I’ve acknowledged him as one of my excellent students.”

And you see the things they never see

Naruto was stunned, so much that his heart stopped for a moment. “He may not be the hardest worker…And he’s clumsy so nobody accepts him. But he already knows what it is to feel pain in your heart. He isn’t the demon fox anymore—he’s a member of the Hidden Leaf Village…He’s…” The academy student’s cerulean eyes watered as Iruka said the last words.

All you wanted, I could be

“He’s Uzumaki Naruto!”

Tears slid down his face in a stream. He couldn’t stop crying—crying from relief, from joy, and from love. No one had ever been so kind to him, so accepting of who he was. Naruto had killed his parents, made him suffer as an orphan, but he had still asked for his name, still ruffled his hair. Naruto stole the forbidden scroll of seals, stupid enough to fall for Mizuki’s trap, but he shielded him at the risk of his own life. Naruto ran away from him, unable to take in the blow of Mizuki’s words, but he still protected him. The boy no one loved—no one saw—finally felt what it was like to have the tender feeling in his heart.

“Okay, whatever…” Mizuki sighed. “Iruka, I said I would take care of you later, but I’m changing my mind.” The sound of shring rang in the air. The Leaf Village traitor was going to use his second large shuriken. Naruto stood up with a scowl on his face. Bastard.

Iruka closed his eyes. The cut on his back almost paralyzed him; he couldn’t escape. At least, he hoped, he got his words across to Naruto. If it did, then he would die content. Naruto was like a surrogate son to him, even with the thirteen-year age difference. As the years had gone by, he had begun to understand the meaning of the Hokage’s words. The boy was so much like him when he was young, and he had realized that this was the very reason he had become a teacher in the first place. He wanted the students to know that they were accepted no matter what, that they were part of the Leaf Village family. A smile crept up his lips. Well, his job was done.

The shuriken whirled around Mizuki’s hand as he snarled, “Hurry up and die!”

Iruka waited for the weapon to tear his body apart, but it never came. Instead, he heard a loud popping noise. His eyes flew wide open to find a blurred figure kicking Mizuki at the chest, causing the man to fall and lose grip of the shuriken. The star-shaped weapon flew past Iruka into the rustling trees. The blond haired, orange clad…It was Naruto!

Now you know me, and I'm not afraid

“You shouldn’t have done that, punk…” The irritated Mizuki picked himself up.

“Don’t touch Iruka-sensei,” Naruto’s voice was dangerously low and hoarse. He stood up and set the scroll of seals on the ground. “I’ll kill you!”

The traitor snapped back, “Shut up! I could kill a punk like you in one shot!”

The boy’s two arms formed two seals. “Try it, trash! I’ll return the pain a thousand times over!”

“Then do it, demon fox!”

And I wanna tell you who I am

“Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!” Suddenly there were many Naruto’s, spread all over the place from the high tree branches to the ground below. Mizuki stepped back at the sheer number of the boy.

“What—what is this?!”

“What’s wrong?” all the Naruto’s sneered at once, “Weren’t you going to kill me with one shot?”

Iruka leaned forward. Naruto had failed the test because his worst jutsu was the Bunshin no Jutsu. Ironically, to Iruka’s surprise, he seemed to have mastered the forbidden Shadow Clone skill—a higher form of the clone technique. A feeling of pride overtook the young teacher as he looked on.

“Well then,” Naruto pushed his jacket sleeves up his arm. “I’ll start things off!” Mizuki’s scream wrecked the forest air, followed by the endless sound of punching and kicking. When the smack-down finally ended, and Mizuki’s pitiful body was lying on the floor, Naruto scratched his head sheepishly. “I went a little too far…” He glanced at his teacher. “Are you all right, Iruka-sensei?”

Iruka let out a sigh, smiling. “Naruto, come over here… There’s something I want to give you.”

Can you help me be a man?

“Okay, you can open your eyes.” Naruto squinted, adjusting his vision to the dawning light. He noticed Iruka’s bare forehead, and then the pair of goggles held in his hand. Slowly, his hand reached up to touch the metal plate on his head. He could feel the engraved symbol of the Leaf.

“Congratulations…on graduating…”

Naruto was speechless.

“Let’s celebrate! I’ll treat you to ramen.”

Silence. Iruka was puzzled.

All of a sudden, Naruto jumped on him and hugged him ecstatically.

“Hey, that hurts!”

The new shinobi couldn’t help but laugh joyfully. “Thank you, Sensei!”

Zabuza was too strong. At this rate, the three Genin would be killed. Naruto shook in fear and backed up, just about to run away. But as he used the left hand to push him up from the floor, he winced from the pain of the deep cut, startling him to remember the blood oath he took earlier.

He had promised himself, on the pain of his left hand that he would never run away again, that he would never need to be saved again. Was he a man to go back on his words? The taunting ebony eyes of Sasuke fired his determination more. Like hell he would lose to that guy!

He glanced at his Leaf head protector under the arrogant foot of Zabuza. It was Iruka’s head guard, the symbol that he was no longer a student—but a shinobi. This wasn’t an illusion, a nightmare he was having—the situation was real. Zabuza was wrong about the genin. They weren’t acting like ninjas—they were ninjas. Azure eyes narrowed and he lowered his head in a determined glare. No… He howled as he sprinted forward. He wouldn’t run away!

They can break me

“Naruto, what are you thinking?!” Sakura shouted, terrified to see her teammate ready to commit suicide.

“He…” The blond ninja was such a fool that Sasuke was at a loss for words.

With a snort, the jounin kicked him easily away with one foot, muttering idiot under his breath. What did the brat intended to do? Strangle him?

Naruto’s body skid all the way back to where she and Sasuke were standing. “What are you doing jumping in by yourself?! We genin have no chance against him!” Sakura rebuked. She stepped forward to help him, but he already pushed himself up by the arms. Her jade eyes widened at the object he clutched in his hands. The forehead protector?

“Hey, you eyebrow-less freak…” A stream of crimson ran down his mouth. His body was aching painfully to the vicious kick on the chest, but he managed to stand up. “Put this in your handbook… The man who will become Hokage…” He tied the head guard back around his forehead, his eyes a flaming blue. “…is the Leaf Village Ninja Uzumaki Naruto!”

As long as I know who I am

He struggled to open his eyes and when his vision cleared, he saw the bloody foot of Sasuke. Behind that was the prostrate body of the masked ninja boy they had worked hard to try and defeat.

And I want a moment to be real,

“Geez…all you ever do is get in the way…” Sasuke’s voice was breathless and raspy.

“Sasuke, you…!” Although his rival was the one to bring him down, Naruto was elated by the fact itself that Zabuza’s invincible subordinate was beaten. But joyous expression fell off his face as he noticed the stream of blood gushing to the floor. He looked up and realized the boy he hated had blocked him from the needles. The sharp needles had pierced all around Sasuke’s neck. It was almost déjà vu.

Wanna touch things I don't feel,

“What’s…with that face…you total moron…” Sasuke slowly turned to glare at him, sweat and blood dripping down his face in beads.

“Why…?”

Sasuke managed to snort derisively back. “How should I know…? I hated you.”

Naruto was incredulous. “But…but why? Why me?”

The other dropped his head, and said nothing.

“I never asked for your help!” He had told himself that he wouldn’t need to be saved again, but despite it all, in the end, he was always saved. First by Iruka, and now Sasuke…

“I don’t know… My body just moved on its own… Idiot,” Sasuke muttered. The pain was so overwhelming that he was starting to succumb to unconsciousness. The brave genin fell off his feet backward and Naruto caught him, a choke ready to burst out of his throat.

Uchiha Sasuke, the most popular guy during the school days, the object of every girl’s affection, the number one rookie ninja… He was acknowledged for everything Naruto wanted to be. He hated to be in the shadow of this cocky raven-haired genius and immediately, from the very beginning, swore to outdo him.

Wanna hold on and feel I belong.

And this damn boy saved him. He accepted Naruto as one of his teammates, a friend—a precious person to be protected. Two opposite ends of the spectrum—an inevitable clash—was the start of a close friendship. The differences between them didn’t matter—in the end, they were equals.

“That man…” Sasuke struggled to speak. “My brother…I told myself I wouldn’t die until I killed him…Don’t die…either…”

Cerulean eyes welled up in tears. To sacrifice his life—his goals—his dreams, just so that his friend could continue his own…

And how can the world want me to change,

“He landed a blow on me without flinching… To protect a precious person, knowing it was a trap, he was still able to jump in.” The missing-nin stood up. “He’s a shinobi that deserves respect.” The elite ninja’s voice was dull. “Is this your first death of a friend? This is the way of the shinobi…” He stepped back into the mirrors to finish the other boy.

They’re the ones that stay the same.

“Shut up,” whispered Naruto. He set Sasuke down gently. He hated him too. He wasn’t going to lose to Sasuke. He shot a deadly glare at Zabuza’s comrade. For the sake of Sasuke, not only for revenge, but because that missing-nin took away Sasuke’s dream to save his own, Naruto was going to kill him.

They can’t see me,

He felt something inside of him unlock. Chakra built up around him like the fury in his heart. The energy whirled around him like a maelstrom and the elite ninja seemed so weak and small to him now. Anger was his power. He charged at him, a curled, hardened fist ready to let fly.

But I’m still here.

Neji’s eyes narrowed. That boy wasn’t going to last long with only persistence. One more attack, and Naruto Uzumaki, the boy who dreamed to be Hokage, would be crushed. “Your destiny is to lose to me. There’s no doubt.”

They can’t tell me who to be,

“We won’t know until it’s over,” Naruto snapped back. Really, this guy was more annoying than Sasuke. He had already been through what it was like to feel worthless—and damn it, he wasn’t going to go through it again. He may not have talent or strength, but these setbacks didn’t matter. All he had and all he needed were in his hands: strength—the strength of heart and determination. Neji didn’t reply as he tied the head guard back on over his curse seal. “I don’t know how much it hurt when your father was killed a long time ago but…” His face was contorted into a scowl. “Thinking that destiny is decided because of that is a huge mistake!”

The talented member of the Hyuga clan sighed. “You’re hopeless.” Veins rose above the skin around his pupil-less eyes as he lunged forward and landed a taijutsu blow on Naruto, causing the relentless idiot to fall and slide a few feet away. Naruto wouldn’t be able to stand any longer, his heart muscles would be constricting in pain and he wouldn’t be able to breathe for a few minutes. Neji glanced at Gemma. “Examiner, it’s hopeless.” He straightened from his battle stance and turned away from the fallen ninja, muttering. “…Damn loser…”

Naruto slumped forward, holding his stomach. A metallic-tasting liquid filled his mouth and he spat it out. He struggled to bring himself together, but his senses were numbed to the point that he saw double-vision and couldn’t hear the commotion going on in the spectator stands. His muscles ached so painfully that he felt immobilized. He concluded wryly to himself that being alive hurt.

‘Cause I’m not what they see.

But he pushed himself up, gasping. For the bruised and beaten Hinata, who forced herself back up to fight; for Lee, even though he was unconscious and his leg and arm crushed, still stood up. These people lost although they tried their best—but for them, he wouldn’t lose now. He couldn’t—not only could he not stand this bastard, he needed to prove something to everyone that dreams can come true, that nothing is impossible.

Before Neji could reach the stairs, Naruto rasped out, “D-don’t run away.”

Neji frowned as he pivoted around. He had never seen a guy so stubborn. It was surprising he could actually still talk.

“I won’t run…I don’t go back on my word,” the persistent kid panted.

The other ninja scoffed. “I’ve heard that before.”

“There’s no way I’ll lose to a coward who’s always whining about destiny,” he said through clenched teeth.

And the world is still sleepin’,

The Hyuga boy furrowed his brow, the veins rising once more. “An ignorant brat like you shouldn’t be lecturing,” he snarled. He had used the Byakugen more in here than any other battle, which was careless, but the fool just couldn’t help fueling his temper, could he? “People are born burdened with a destiny they cannot oppose.” He pointed at him, hand trembling in fury. “You could never understand what it’s like to be burdened with a symbol you could never rid yourself of!”

While I keep on dreamin’ for me.

Nine-tails in his shadow…seclusion…isolation…the hatred in their gazes…the ice in their touch…the tears that fell from his eyes. This time, it was Naruto who smirked. “Yeah…I can…” he said slowly. “And… So what?” He could see the whining brat become angrier, but he snorted. Served the arrogant ninja right to have his huge ego inflated. “…Stop acting cool…you’re not the only one that’s special! Hinata too… She’s suffered as much as you!” He promised her that he would kick her cousin’s ass—a man wasn’t to go back on his words. “A member of the main family…but not acknowledged, trying to change herself… Thinking that as she was coughing blood while fighting you! You’re the same! The branch family is supposed to protect the main family, yet doing that to Hinata… In truth, you’re fighting your hardest to disobey destiny…”

Nothing could destroy the years-old grudge Neji built in his heart. “Your sixty-four opening points are closed. You won’t be able to use chakra for awhile. How can you fight?” What a fool that Naruto was, blabbering his mouth off even when he had lost. “In the end, you and Hinata-sama share the same destiny!”

And they’ll want to just whispers,

“Shut up! Stop using that Byakugen to decide and act like you know everyone’s destiny!” Naruto was itching to give the cocky bastard a good punch.

“Then prove to me that what you are saying is correct.”

“Yeah! I’m definitely gonna defeat you and prove that!” The hell he had been through—the hell Hinata and Lee went through—wasn’t so that he would lose to a guy who never experienced it. To put it crudely, Neji needed some good ole Naruto-style ass-kicking. But he cursed silently. He couldn’t feel any of his chakra, just like during training with Jiraiya. If he had lost all of his regular chakra, then…then he remembered the perv-sennin’s words… The second, vaster store of chakra—the chakra of the nine-tails demon fox!

“Enough talking,” the conceited Hyuga shinobi cut in sharply. He glanced at the referee again. “Examiner, I’m going to go at him intending to kill! If you want to stop it, then go ahead.” This boy’s words infuriated him enough to want to kill him and close that big mouth of his forever.

Gemma snorted, with one thought in mind: kids these days.

Naruto dropped into a jutsu stance, his fingers fixed into two neutral seal gestures. He was going to try and open up his chakra.

“It’s useless. Your points have been pressed.” Neji couldn’t believe the thickness and density of that boy’s head.

And lies that I’ll never believe.

Naruto ignored him. He closed his eyes and concentrated, his whole body becoming tense as he reached into the depths of his soul to tap into the demon’s force. He could almost feel the energy spreading in the inner coils, static heat forcing the numbness of his body out. It was coming…all he needed was a push of his will to charge it.

“Can I ask you something?” Neji was unaware of what Naruto was doing. “Why do you go against your destiny so much?”

And I want a moment to be real,

The azure eyes dimmed in remembrance. “Because I was called a loser.” A great battle cry then rang in the air as he pushed the chakra out, causing the dust to fly up in the ferocious whirl of energy. The pain disappeared as his cells began to regenerate the damaged parts of his body under the healing effect of the nine-tail’s power. Although Naruto and the demon’s chakra mixed together, he was still Naruto—his eyes were still two bright sapphires, unwavering and determined. “Here I come!”

Wanna touch things I don't feel,

Neji shielded himself from the flying dust, his eyes filled with disbelief. Naruto wasn’t supposed to emit any chakra, but somehow, the strange boy broke through the sealed openings with more force than before. Nine black waves of ominous energy burst out and circled Naruto like dark glowing snakes. The Huuga ninja had never seen chakra so intense.

Wanna hold on and feel I belong.

The blond boy disappeared from the ground and Neji, with his 360-degree vision, was barely able to sense him flying through the air. He executed the heavenly spin to ward off the rapidly-thrown shuriken and caught three of them in his hand. He sent them speeding back to its owner, but the throwing stars stuck themselves onto the stadium wall instead. Naruto was on the opposite wall. Neji’s colorless eyes narrowed as he whirled around with a kunai ready. The two of them clashed kunai against kunai. The two daggers spun as it hit each other and the opponents landed on opposite sides. The weapons fell to the floor.

“Hey, you’re confident in close combat, right?” the orange-clad ninja smiled as he came charging forward.

And how can they say I never change,

Neji’s arrogant words drifted into his mind: people living within an unchangeable flow…only a few are destined to become Hokage… Naruto frowned defiantly. The whole of his existence contradicted that belief. Life wouldn’t be worth living if you can’t break the mold—defying destiny, believing in yourself when there was nothing else to believe in. “I don’t know about this Hyuga destiny of hatred or whatever,” Naruto shouted. “But if it’s too much for you, then you don’t have to do anything anymore!”

They’re the ones that stay the same.

Neji’s eyes widened in horror and he performed his special technique to try and guard against the tremendous power. Naruto rushed at Neji, his will and chakra merging together like an inescapable cyclone, his rough and boyish voice overriding the chaos.

“When I become the Hokage…I’ll change the Hyuga!”

The two tornadoes collided, creating a blast of ground debris and clouds of sand to rise. The forces sent the two flying into the ground on the far ends of the arena, forming two similar craters. The audience was holding their breath collectively, anxiously waiting for the winner to arise from the smoke. Sakura leaned forward on the railing, heart pounding.

“Hey, which one is Naruto?” she asked the friend beside her.

“I don’t know either,” Ino exclaimed.

Suddenly, a hand appeared out of one hole, followed by a series of coughing. The figure climbed out as the smoke cleared away, revealing a filthy and bruised, but very much alive, Neji. An unconscious Naruto was found lying inside the other crater, defeated in spite of his courageous efforts. Everyone fell back on their seats. The winner had been decided.

“Loser…” Neji panted as he stood looking at the other. He was too tired to be triumphant. He had to give the idiot some credit though to push him this far. “Sorry, but… This is reality.” But then he felt Naruto’s chakra appear again—below him. It happened so slowly to Neji, but his worn out body couldn’t react to the blow. The ground ripped apart as a fist flew up and connected with Neji’s jaw. Neji’s whole body was pushed up from the vicious uppercut and he fell sprawled on the floor, grunting in pain. “My body…” So incapacitated he was that he couldn’t move a muscle except to breathe. “To quickly use the Kage no Bunshin in that situation… Your main jutsu, isn’t it? How careless of me…”

I’m the one now,

Naruto trudged to his exhausted form and looked down at him, wheezing. Finally, Neji got the punch he deserved. It felt good. He stayed silent until he was able to breathe a little more easily. “I…I failed the academy graduation exam three times…” He noticed Neji’s puzzled expression. “That’s because unluckily for me, the ninjutsu test on the final exam was always decided as…always decided as my weakest ninjutsu.” He lowered his gaze in a pause and then met Neji’s questioning stare again. “The Bunshin no Jutsu was my worst ninjutsu.” A look of surprise crossed the Hyuga genius’s face.

“Destiny can’t be changed, blah, blah, blah… Stop whining about stupid crap like that,” he continued. “Since…you’re not a loser like me.”

There was a smirk on Gemma’s face, but the special Jounin was pleased to announce Uzumaki Naruto as the winner. The stadium was so quiet, stunned at the change of victory. Until…

A grinning Sakura stood up and yelled out, “Yay! Naruto won!” Suddenly, the people burst into applause and cheers. No one would have known that the fox demon boy had such a strong resilience. Naruto swerved around to face the audience, startled.

“That was incredible!”

“That was great!”

“Great fight, shrimp!”

‘Cause I’m still here.

Naruto grinned so widely that his face could have split in half and flashed a peace sign. He was tired, but the cheers and clapping erupting from the spectators fueled his energy and he ran around, waving and bowing. The boy who was ignored was being seen. People had foreordained him to a void existence, but he had broken through it. He had defied destiny.

And of course, he wouldn’t stop from there.

Obsidian eyes narrowed. “Never again…” Naruto look up at him. Sasuke’s voice was trembling with emotion, but he was resolute. “I already lost everything before…I don’t ever want to watch those dear to me die before my eyes again…”

Naruto realized… Sasuke risking his life to save him from Haku’s deadly needles… Sakura’s intense, hardened eyes as she leaped in front of Sasuke, kunai gripped in her hands… Kakashi’s smile that sealed his promise to protect his comrades… Naruto stood up beside Sasuke. “It’s true…isn’t it…?” Sasuke shot him a questioning look.

I’m the one,

“Because he was like me…Because he lived the same kind of loneliness and sadness I did…I thought he was strong ‘cause he survived that solitude, fighting for only himself.” He watched Gaara’s mutated form without disgust or contempt.

Naruto fought for his dream, for revenge, to prove himself… Now…

“But I was wrong. His strength isn’t real…” The orange-clad ninja glanced at Sasuke. “Strength doesn’t come from fighting alone. Real strength is not what you have when you fight for only yourself.”

Now it was time that he fought for those he loved. Like Haku, who sacrificed his life for Zabuza…like Iruka, despite everything, saved him… How can he reach his goals when he’s alone? How can he obtain the meaning of his own existence when others have died? Without Iruka, without Sasuke and Sakura, without Kakashi…he wouldn’t have been walking on the path to his dreams.

‘Cause I’m still here.

He finally knew the difference between him and Gaara. Naruto had people who acknowledged him from the bottom of their hearts. Their caring saved him from insanity—from being worthless. He had never felt so blessed in his life—to experience this feeling that many took for granted and some didn’t have at all. And he wasn’t going to have this feeling slip past his fingers like a ghost of a flickering flame. He was going to protect it because…

“When you have something special that you want to protect…” Naruto formed a seal with his fingers, the resolve in his gaze drastically different from before.

Sasuke was startled. “Naruto…”

“Only then can you become truly strong!” For the second time that day, Naruto unlocked the key to open a demonic power—this time to protect others. “I’ll protect them no matter what!”

The blades of grass brushed against his tanned face as he turned on his side, sighing contentedly. Washed-out blue eyes blinked drowsily as it traveled past the green fields and afternoon sky. Colors of blue, white, and green seemed to blend together into a hazy jumble of today. Another array of colors flew in front of his eyes and landed lightly on his hand. He didn’t dare to move as the butterfly flapped its wings slowly at him, and then fluttered away. His eyes closed and a smile drifted across his lips.

I’m still here.

Someone’s hand was on his shoulder, shaking him. “Hey, you total moron, wake up… Naruto!”

His eyes opened once more to see a familiar raven-haired ninja’s face. He grumbled as he sat up. That ugly face wasn’t the first thing he wanted to see when he woke up. “What do ya want?”

Sasuke straightened and thrust his hands in his pockets, snorting. “Is this what you call training?”

“Shaddup, Sasuke,” Naruto replied as he rubbed his eyes.

Sakura bent over and lightly tapped the metal plate on his forehead, smiling. “What are you doing here?” She seemed to be nice to him today. He wished she was the one he saw first.

The orange-clad ninja grinned sheepishly and scratched the back of his head. “I just fell asleep, that’s all.”

“What were you dreaming about?” she asked. Sasuke raised an eyebrow as well.

I’m still here.

“I…” He dreamed of many things. He dreamed about a tiny blond-haired kid, a pineapple-headed teacher, ramen, becoming Hokage, fighting for his belief and to protect, challenging the odds. He dreamed of things that happened and of things that have yet to pass. Thirteen years and he had come a long way, though thirteen years was just not enough for him. He was going to live to the end of his day—maybe just like that old man Third Hokage. The dreams would never end…because they were real. But that was not for us to tell him and for him to know anyway, since…

“I forgot.”

Iruka had always preferred dogs to most other animals. So when a strange dog wearing a shirt and a pair of sunglasses approached him in the streets, he didn’t back off right away. It cocked its head up at him and grinned with its mouth open. “Iruka-sensei?”

It took a few moments for Iruka to register that the dog was actually speaking to him. “Y-yes?”

“I have a special request for you from my master Hatake Kakashi.” The dog sat down on his hindquarters and tilted his head like a puppy. “Will you accept the message?” His tongue lolled out of the side of his mouth.

“Y-yes, I will.”

The dog cleared his throat in an attempt to appear impressive and straightened his back. “Iruka-sensei, Kakashi-sensei formally invites you to join him for lunch at the Rice Hut. He says he will be paying so don’t bother bringing money.”

Iruka blinked. “Kakashi-sensei…”

“Would like to buy you lunch,” finished the dog, slouching again into a relaxed position. “Whaddya say? Free lunch, a friend, maybe even a scratch behind the ears?” He glanced with round eyes over the tops of his sunglasses. “How about it, sensei?”

Laughing, the teacher reached down and scratched the dog behind his ears. “Yes, I’ll go.” The dog butted into Iruka’s hand, tongue once again dropping out of the side of his mouth. It felt a little strange to be petting something that talked, but then again strange things tended to happen in the Hidden Leaf Village. Plus it was a little strange to be asked to lunch at three o’clock in the afternoon. But that was Kakashi- always late. With a final pat, Iruka stood up straight and nodded to the dog. “Will you be showing me the way?”

The dog grinned sloppily and nodded before taking off at an easy lope. Iruka followed at a trot, waving at passing children and nodding to their parents. He knew the way well enough to the Rice Hut, so even if he lost the dog, he knew he would be able to get there. Soon enough, the garish red roof of the Rice Hut came into view. Outside, lounging against an ugly green pillar was none other than Kakashi.

The other ninja was reading well worn pink backed novel, but looked up as soon as Iruka began to approach him. “Aa. I see that Neko-chan found you,” he said, waving his hand a little to dismiss the dog.

Iruka raised an eyebrow. “Your dog’s name is Neko-chan?”

“Yeah.” Lazily, Kakashi reached up to scratch at his head. “So, you hungry?”

He wasn’t. “Um, yes, of course!” He laughed and silently cursed his face for the blush that was beginning to spread across his cheeks. “Thank you for inviting me.” He was about to make a little bow when he noticed the other ninja had his back turned and was already entering the restaurant. With a little frustrated whimper, he followed.

Inside the Rice Hut was just as loud and obnoxious as the outside. The seats were all a brilliant orange while the tables contrasted with a luscious blue. Hanging from the low ceiling were fish nets strung with brilliantly colored Chinese lanterns. And, to accentuate the color, steam hung in the air like an indoor fog. In the back kitchen, pots and pans were being banged and loud voices could be heard complaining about the freshness of fish. Iruka winced and followed his companion over to a table towards the back where the tables turned into private booths.

Kakashi sat down and leaned back as if he was comfortable being in such a strange atmosphere. He fingered the pair of chopsticks that were set before him and grinned across the table at Iruka. “Glad I finally caught you when you were free.”

Iruka gave a weak smile, trying to think of when the other man had tried to reach him at all. “So… is there something you wanted to talk about?”

“What do you want to eat?” Kakashi said, abruptly changing the subject. “The food here is really good. Personally, I was considering having the third combo.”

“Um…”

“I think you should get that, too. You’ll like it.” The silver haired ninja raised his hand to his mouth and called out, “Ichiro! Two number threes at table six!”

A rather harried looking young man poked his head out from the kitchen area. “Ah… Kakashi-sensei… I will bring them right away!” With a charming grin, he disappeared, followed by a loud crash and more yelling.

“Eeehh… Kakashi-sen-“

“Oh, I forgot to order drinks. Is it all right if we get them when he delivers the soup?” Kakashi leaned his head on his left palm, propping his elbow on the table. “If you’re thirsty now, I can just call him back out.” He grinned, the one visible eye crinkling happily.

“N-no, that’s…all right.” Iruka looked down at his hands, wondering if he would ever get a chance to speak. Once again, the blush on his cheeks flared to life.

“Good. Then we can talk.”

Iruka looked up quickly and caught a dangerously serious expression on his companion’s face. “Is something wrong, Kakashi-sensei?” he asked, worried. “Did Naruto… was he misbehaving?”

Kakashi was silent for a minute. Then he spoke up slowly. “Do you know that the Red Festival is coming up in a week?”

“Um… yes…”

“It’s a family festival.”

Iruka’s nervous heart plummeted. He remembered going to the Red Festival with his family when he was very young. He had made wish boats out of the red maple leaves and floated them down the stream. It had been his favorite festival of the year, what with the lovely fall colors and all the good food to eat. His family had been at its closest during the Red Festivals. At night his father would tell ghost stories and in the morning his mother would sing. All this… before the Nine Tails. Before…

“Naruto.”

“What?” Iruka looked up suddenly from where he had been staring at the table.

“I thought that would get your attention,” Kakashi said, a hint of a smile passing through his eyes. He shifted slightly against the booth. “Two of my students have no family to celebrate this festival with.” His tone was casual, but carried an undertone of deeper meaning.

“Naruto and Sasuke…”

Kakashi nodded and leaned forward. “A teacher is close to a parent, ne?”

Iruka blinked. “You want me to take them to the festival?”

“No, I want us to take them to the festival. As their parents.”

Iruka stared glumly at the boxes in front of him. They looked nothing like the wonderful food boxes that his mother used to make for the festival. His rice was clumpy and slightly too brown and each piece of sushi that he had tried to cut looked like someone stepped on it. Even the small pudding cups that he had labored over were spilling onto the other food. With a groan, Iruka let his head drop onto his arms. How on earth had Kakashi convinced him to be the “mother” in this situation?

Just then a loud knock sounded at the door. “SENSEEEEEEIIIIIII! FESTIVAL TIME!!”

Only one person in the village could be that loud and that annoying at seven thirty in the evening. Iruka crossed his kitchen and opened the door to greet exactly who he thought it was- Uzumaki Naruto. The blond boy stared up at him with one of his famous foxy grins. Amazingly enough, he wasn’t wearing his usual orange outfit. Instead, a dark blue kimono graced his young frame. It was complemented by a pale blue obi which matched his eyes. Obviously, Naruto had not picked out his own clothes. “Hello, Naruto.”

“Hi, Iruka-sensei.” The blond hopped into the house and bounced around a little. “Kakashi-sensei made me wear this but I think it looks stupid. He’s making Sasuke wear one, too. Sasuke’s wearing a white one. He’s going to get food all over it. Kakashi said if he was going to have to wear a kimono, so were we. You’re wearing one too, aren’t you? Blue is a really boring color, sensei. Did you make food for us?” By now, Naruto was peering into the little boxes of food. “Wow, you really suck.”

Iruka put his hand to his forehead and laughed a little. “Calm down, please…”

“Okay, I’m not really that excited, it’s just that I’ve never gone to the Red Festival before and Kakashi-sensei said we could make wishes and Sasuke was nervous about coming and there’s lots of good food to be eaten and they said we could get some ramen and yakiso-“

Fortunately for the mild-mannered teacher, another knock sounded on the door. He hastily excused himself and hurried over. Upon opening it, he found the remaining two of his party on his doorstep. Sasuke was wearing a very disgruntled expression and a white kimono with purple trim. To tell the truth, he looked absolutely stunning. But he was eclipsed by the man standing behind him.

Kakashi had always been good looking. But now, traditionally dressed in black and red, he looked magnificent. His usual bored attitude was replaced by a strange look of parental pride as he pushed his dark haired charge into the house. “Well, Iruka-sensei, are you ready to take our children to the festival?”

Iruka blushed deeply. “They aren’t our children…”

“Tonight they are.”

For some reason, this made butterflies run amok in his stomach. Our children… He had to grip the door frame to keep a hold on reality. Ah… this is why he could never be Jounin, even if he wanted to. His emotions were plain as day and they affected him much more than they should for a truly talented ninja. “Yes, for tonight…”

Kakashi turned and suddenly Iruka noticed that he wasn’t wearing his usual headpiece. Both eyes were visible and both were crinkled up in a smile. The rest of his face, however, was still covered in black cloth. “You still get to be the mommy, though.”

“A…aa…”

“Sensei!” An upset looking Naruto tugged on Iruka’s sleeve. “Can we go, please? I want to eat! Sasuke is being stupid. Let’s go! I want to leave!”

Kakashi backhanded his student lightly. “Calm down, Naruto. We’re going.”

“Ooooowww! Is that any way to treat your son on a festival night?” Naruto pouted.

“You’re not his child,” growled Sasuke.

“You’re both my children tonight!” Kakashi said, grinning and dragging the two into a hug that neither really wanted. He let them go and gathered Iruka to him. “And you’re my beautiful wife.” Cheekily, he planted a cloth covered kiss on the Chuunin’s forehead. “Ah, I love my family.” And, before anyone could protest, he skipped out the door. “Come on!”

The others followed him, the boys slightly grumpy and Iruka blushing brilliantly as he lugged the dinner boxes in the evening light. Outside, red lanterns had been hung along the streets along with large signs listing the events in different parts of the village. They had already decided on a destination, so Iruka didn’t even glance at the signs. Naruto and Sasuke on the other hand began to squabble about where to go first. Kakashi ended up smacking them both upside the head before they continued toward the picnic area.

“Sakuraaa-chaaan!” yelled Naruto as soon as they got there, waving at the pink haired girl. She waved back, smiled winningly at Sasuke, and then returned to the food she was sharing with her little sister.

Sasuke spread out the green striped blanket and they all plopped down on it, with the exception of Kakashi who excused himself to get some water. Iruka handed out the boxes to the boys and himself, setting a place for Kakashi beside him. They had set up next to the Inuzuka family who, as usual, had a grouping of various dogs around them. Akamaru sniffed his way over to Iruka and barked happily, wagging his little tail.

“Well, hello, Akamaru-kun,” Iruka said politely and scratched him behind the ears. Akamaru wiggled closer, smiling delightfully. Kiba also smiled and his eyes fazed a little as if he could feel his ears being scratched as well.

“Hey, sensei…”

“Kiba-kun.” Iruka smiled. “It’s good to see you here with all the family.” He gave Akamaru a final pat on the head and then sent him running back to his owner. “Even your older brother is here!”

“Yup!” Kiba grinned widely. “Everyone in my family!” Then his face took on a puzzled expression. “Iruka-sensei, why are you here? You never come to Red Festival. And Naurto and Sasuke are with you? What is going on?” He laughed a little. “Are you adopting them?”

“We’re his kids for the night,” Naruto stated, smiling broadly and flinging his arms around his former teacher. “He’s our mommy!”

“Na-Naruto!” Iruka turned red.

“It’s true, though,” Naruto said, responding to Kiba’s puzzled expression. “Kakashi is our daddy and Iruka is our mommy for the night.”

Kiba blinked several times and then nodded dumbly. He turned back to his family without another word, as Akamaru began to cheerfully chew on Komaru’s ear. The entire clan was here… though they were scattered throughout the crowd. Thus, several dogs would trot by each minute, carrying something for their masters or just roughhousing on the grass.

Kakashi returned just as a pair of puppies tumbled each other into the Inuzuka family’s food. “Water, anyone?”

Naruto grabbed for a bottle, while Sasuke reached for the same one. They fought over it for a bit, as expected, and then Sasuke ended up taking one of the remaining two bottles. Kakashi handed Iruka the last one. “You and I will be sharing tonight, my dearest wife.”

Iruka’s face couldn’t have been redder if he had tried. “Please don’t call me that, Kakashi-sensei…”

“Don’t call me sensei, then,” Kakashi replied. His eyelids lowered a little.

“What… should I call you?”

Kakashi was silent for a moment, his gaze still holding Iruka’s. Then, suddenly, both his eyes arced into a smile. “You can call me Beloved.”

That night was one of the most beautiful nights that the Hidden Leaf Village had ever seen. The stars peeked between the trees, and the full moon shone down brightly while fat red lanterns dispelled the darkness in places the natural light didn’t reach. People everywhere were smiling and talkative. Iruka personally felt that he hadn’t known life until this moment. Walking with Kakashi and his two quibbling students… eating dumplings off a stick… it was absolutely beautiful.

They spent at least an hour (and all of Naruto’s money) at a fish catching booth, waiting for Naruto to catch one of the wiggly goldfish. Sasuke took about three tries before getting his, and Naruto was not about to lose to his rival. When he finally did catch one, he managed to catch two at the same time. He dubbed them “cute” and carried them proudly in their plastic bag. Sasuke had already named his fish “Fish.”

The next hour they spent at various gaming booths. Sasuke won a large purple bear at a shuriken accuracy booth for those under fifteen. He claimed it was going to be a dummy for sparring, but Iruka could see the shine in his eyes when he held the soft bear to his side. Kakashi loudly claimed that he would win flowers for his wife at a weight guessing booth. And, to Iruka’s embarrassment, he ended up with a bunch of red carnations from the silver haired jounin. Naruto, too, won a small plastic frog at a shooting booth and tried to make his fish be friends with it. He had named it “Stupid” so that he could tell people “I’m with Stupid” whenever they asked if he was alone. Iruka tried a throwing game and won an alarm clock which shrilled “Good moooooorning!” quite loudly. He gave it to Kakashi.

Finally, they visited the food booths. Despite having just eaten, the two boys and Kakashi wolfed down food for at least three people and severely depleted both Iruka’s and Kakashi’s money. Naruto clambered for ramen, Sasuke’s sushi disappeared at an alarming rate, and Kakashi fairly wriggled at the mention of yakisoba. Iruka himself only took a few dumplings before following his still-munching companions back to their blanket.

They shooed away some of the Inuzuka’s dogs before settling down and waiting for the fireworks. Naruto fell against Sasuke, causing the dark haired boy to yell at him. Kakashi reached out and lifted Naruto into his lap, which caused even more excitement before they all settled down. Naruto was on his back, watching the sky, while Sasuke had propped himself up on his elbows. Kakashi leaned against Iruka as they waited patiently.

Some of the younger chuunins had been put in charge of the fireworks with an elder watching over them. Several of the families had been worried about this, but it seemed to work out even better than previous years. The sky soon was littered with brilliant reds and golds. Occasionally a blue or green firework was set off, but since it was the Red Festival- there were primarily warm colors.

Towards the end of the display, Iruka suddenly started. Kakashi had taken his hand and laced their fingers together. He leaned close to the dark haired man’s ear and said quietly, “Thank you, Iruka-sensei.” Iruka’s stomach filled with butterflies.

“Kakashi…sensei…” Iruka blushed deeply. “Kakashi… thank you. You were the one who thought of this. They look like they’re really having fun.”

“Are you having fun?”

“Aa….” Iruka turned so that he was facing the other man. “Yes. I am having a wonderful time.”

“I like you,” Kakashi said simply.

“Sensei!” cried Naruto, jumping onto Iruka and hugging him around his stomach. “Can I sleep at your house tonight?” He rubbed his cheek against the older man’s kimono. “Your house is soooooo coooooool….”

“Yes, Iruka. Let’s all sleep at your house.” Kakashi’s eyes seemed to rip holes in Iruka’s self-control. “Come on, Sasuke.”

They made their way back to the chuunin’s house and settled down for the evening, Naruto and Sasuke in the guest room, Iruka in his room, and Kakashi on the couch. In a few minutes, the boys had begun to snore. Iruka, on the other hand, lay awake.

He rolled over and over and then finally spread out all over the bed. Kakashi had said it. He had said… “I like you.” What did he mean by that? Did he mean “I like you because you’re a nice person?” Did he mean “I like you because you make worse rice than I do?” Did he mean “I like you because you also take care of Naruto?” Or did he mean… Iruka closed his eyes, not willing to think of it any more.

“I said, ‘I like you.’”

Iruka sat straight up and faced the intruder on his room. Kakashi stood in the doorway, his arms folded across his chest. The black kimono he was wearing slid down his shoulder. Iruka took a shaky breath. “What do you mean?”

“I mean…” Kakashi began, and then stopped. It took at least half a minute before he spoke again. “I mean that I want to know you. I had fun. You…” He moved across the room and perched on Iruka’s bed. “I think I’m attracted to you, too.”

“Ka-Kakashi?”

The silver haired shinobi moved closer and pressed his cloth-covered cheek to Iruka’s. “I want to get to know you. I want to date you. I want to be… I want to be with you.”

Iruka couldn’t say anything.

“I’ll wait. I’ll wait until I know you better. I…” Kakashi pulled away and took the other man’s hand in his own. “I’ll wait until you’re ready.” He stood up and then walked out, pausing at the door. “Iruka… you’re wonderful.”

“So are you…” Iruka whispered and smiled to himself. “So are you.”
